about eduneer ®

Every year, manufacturers produce over one billion cell phones.  With an estimated average length of four inches per phone, one year of production would encircle Earth 2.5 times.  About 15% of cell phones are classified as smartphones, capable of running third-party applications.  Eduneer LLC was started in March 2005 and is developing advanced field guide applications that run on smartphones, including many older smartphones.

The Peck bird information manager was a first-generation field guide application from Eduneer LLC, and it demonstrated flexible organization.  Most field guide smartphone applications mimic the organization of paperback field guides, collecting species information into species summaries.  In contrast, the Peck bird information manager application scattered species information across several lists (e.g., classification, photo, audio, geography) and used a highlight to maintain the context.  For example, highlighting the Northern Cardinal in the classification list and switching to the photo list results in an automatic highlight of the Northern Cardinal in the photo list.  It turns out that this scattered organization is good for development because the task of adding more field guide information is simply the task of adding more items to lists.  Even more important, the scattered organization is quickly accepted by users: of the 1500 posts to the Peck bird information manager support group, not one was about the lack of species summaries.

The universal field guide, introduced in January 2009, is a second-generation field guide application from Eduneer LLC.  Containing all the information from the Peck bird information manager, the universal field guide demonstrates how the impressive storage capacity of today's inexpensive flash memory cards can be employed to tightly integrate information from a variety of field guide subjects (e.g., birds of North America and flowers of North America).

The Tangled field guide, introduced in March 2010, is a third-generation field guide application from Eduneer LLC.  Containing all the information from the universal field guide, the Tangled field guide integrates across field guide topics, across user generated field guide content, and across different smartphone platforms.  The audacious goal is for Tangled to be an inexpensive field guide that describes the field as a whole.  Paperback field guides have been compelling educational tools since 1934 when Roger Tory Peterson's first paperback field guide was published.  With localization, multimedia, and access to orders of magnitude more information, smartphone field guide applications have the potential to be even more compelling educational tools.  Each update brings Tangled closer to that goal.  If you have questions or would like to help, please visit or join the Tangled field guide users' group.
